( (possibly unfair to link to that page as I don't necessarily agree with the entirety of David's post. But I find you recommend against this as early as 2 years ago (per 2015 comments in, and likely before that as well). Is the Creative Suite falling apart? Being able to place native AI files has been touted as one of the stronger points of the CS, because it means we do not have to maintain separate "working" and "export" versions of files. It rapidly evolved into a full coughing fit when reading your answer. PS: Hopefully that cough of yours doesn't indicate that you are catching a cold! That's why we strongly recommend the PDF/X-4 settings with adaptations based on one's needs. Plus, it does not include an Output Intent profile which could be problematic for publishing workflows that are color space-sensitive. It may be “an entire complete PDF” but it doesn't guarantee that the color settings, image compression, image downsampling, etc.
InDesign's "Show Info" actually tells you it's a "PDF" if you select such an AI file. There ought to be no difference between placing this or the same as a PDF. In that case, it's a rather "fat" PDF – it will consist of an entire, complete PDF, with AI's native data stored inside as 'private data'. *cough* unless the OP is randomly checking options on and off, AI's default is to save with full PDF compatibility.
